Modelling sand: £3 for a 3kg bag from B&Q. It has to be dried out, which you can do slowly by sprinkling a handful on newspaper and leaving over 48 hrs, or quickly by heating and stirring in a pan on the hob. Use a pan that you don't like, though, because it will ruin any non-stick surface! Photography: Use a plain background - white, blue or grey is best - and set your camera to maximum zoom and macro, if available. This will make the focal depth and broad as possible, so minis at the back are as clear as ones at the front. If you can, illuminate using a diffused daylight bulb.

blackear created a new blog entry Getting there slowly...

Okay, through the haze of work and such I've managed to start sorting a few things out.

I've had some second hand Deathrippers in simple green for quite a while now and so got them out over the weekend and gave them a good brush, so they've just got a bit of scrapping still needed before I can put them back together.  i discovered when taking them apart that the legs are a bit on the fragile side and now need pinning.  However seen as I've found some resin bases I want to use for them then this shouldn't be too much of a problem as I can pin the whole lot to the base or at least that's the plan.

I've even done some more thinking about  the colour scheme and how the bases are going to look and so hopefully it'll be an army that will really "pop" from the table top.

So off to finish chores off, and then get the last of the paint of the Deathrippers.

Lots to do, still got lots of building to do and I've dropped ten Mechani thralls in to the simple green for stripping as well as a Necrosurgeon and Stitch Thralls.

Pre Tournament Ramble

Okay on Sunday this week I made the journey up to Chorley for a 35 point tournament.  There has been much in the way of uncertainty surrounding this event for me, both with the weather we've been having and with what to take.

My usual aim for any event that I enter is to go for a place in the top five, and this event would be no different.  I've been gearing up to use the Cryx that I picked up last year in MkII and so my plan was to take a Cryx list to Chorley this weekend and after a few test games and a bit of playing about with ibodger and advice from a few different places (Thanks to those involved in the advice giving) I'd got a couple of lists that I wanted to take and play with.  However due to time issues I realised that I wasn't going to get the time to complete building them, especially the Levithan as the legs really need pinning and so I came up with an alternate plan and picked a couple of Legion lists from the fieldtest stuff that's been out.

One of the lists that I have taken is one that I used in a few test games when the Hordes stuff was first released and the other list was one that I fancied playing but hadn't got around to trying yet.  It was actually put together based on advice for how to deal with the heavy shooting armies that seem to be making an appearance at the moment, and so it was pretty fast and everything had Stealth.  Oh and I also made a monumental error in my prep as well, as I put a unit of Raptors in one of my lists and then forgot that they're in a separate box and not in my case, so I'd forgot and left a unit at home :(, so some swapping about on the morning needed to be done, never a good thing, but it seemed to work out okay in the end.

So the lists that I took.

Searyn
Angelius
Angelius
10 Legionnaires
6 Striders
Incubi
Nyss Sorcerer on Hellion
Shepard

This list was a bit of an old school type list really with Searyn and twin Angelius.  Flight is now better than wings in some respects and Searyn's feat grants them the immunity to free strikes that they need to penetrate deep in to the oppositions lines and hurt stuff.  The Sorcerer letting them charge for free is a bit of a bonus and it's a lovely model.  Legionnaires are a nice cheap tar pit with the potential sting of the Incubi, Shepard is there to heal the beasts or force them if they go out wide.  The Striders were a late addition seen as I forgot to take the Raptors with me :(

and the second list that I'd not played with was......

Epic Lylyth,
Angelius,
Angelius,
Raek,
Striders + UA,
Strider Deathstalker,
Strider Deathstalker,
Totem Hunter,
Farrow Bone Grinders,

I wanted the second list to be pretty shooty, for the majority of it to have stealth and so be pretty free from ranged reprisal.  However I also knew that I'd need to be able to deal with Heavy Jack's as well.  I was pretty sure that there would be more of them about in MkII with the boosts to jacks and the free jack points.  I'd been seeing a lot of the Iron Clad in my regular games and so having never seen it in MkI I lept to the blindingly obvious of more 'jacks being about.   So I took the Angelius over the Searph's for the mobile shooting if it was needed and the ability to punch through heavy armour and I put the Raek in as it's really cool and it got better under MKII and I wanted a chance to use it in anger so to speak.

Anyway come Sunday morning the weather was favourable and so like the lone gunman I set of for Chorley in the deepest darkest north west of England in the dark and the wet.  The journey was uneventful and roads were fine and so after a bit standing around chatting we got to it.

Oh and if the pics are a bit on the blurry side it's because I used my phone to take the pics and must have been suffering a bit from shaky hand.

Game One - Mosh Pit - Neil Barton - Menoth

Okay so I'd last played Neil at Game 09 in Manchester where my filthy Blood and Iron list came out on top.  I had the immediate thought that this time it might be a little different though after seeing the figures was getting out on the table.  So I picked my list, which was the Searyn list and we rolled off to see who'd go first.  A roll which Neil won and elected to go first.  Hmmmm going second in Mosh Pit, this already looked like an up hill struggle and then he started putting down this lot.......

Testament of Menoth + Heirophant
Crusader - see I knew that there would be some "free" heavy jacks about.
Full Bastians
Full TFG + UA
Min Knights Exemplar
Min Cleansers
Gravus
Vassall

For a 35 point list there was alot of infantry in there, and I'd already decided that I couldn't kill it all to win the scenario so it was a Caster kill or nothing really.

Neil's Deployment is shown below.  Now looking at how he'd deployed with everything bricked up there wasn't space for me to get the Angelius's in so it was down to the hope that Ic ould make space later on or that some space would open up once the lines met.

and my deployment.....

Reasonably predictable the first turn from both of us was rushing towards each other to get in the mosh pit.  Although the Striders did shoot at the TFG but did nothing to them.  Of and a point to ntoe was that the Crusader had Enliven on it and it had a spell from the Testament as well, which was a move if something dies type of spell, Hallowed Avenger I think.  Of and the TFG had Ashen Veil cast on them as well.

In Neil's turn two he came forward again and was now pretty comfortably in the middle of the mosh pit and so in the middle of the board, so at this point I popped Searyn's feat, Breath Stealered the Crusader than had rushed up and tried to bash in an Angelius after the Striders had CRA'd the Vassal.  Both Angelius then ran to land behind the Menoth lines with one in the back arc and melee range of the Testament and one very near by.  The Legionnaires had also charged, but didn't really do very much once they got there.

So in Neil's next turn the Testament popped his feat and lots of stuff moved through other models which is how the TFG got behind the Striders and the Bastions did some manoeuvring to leave a gap for the Testament to stand in which was just big enough for his bas to fit, so he managed to walk away from the engaging Angelius to safety, although now I can't recal how the Testament got to where he was, as he had to pop his feat to allow the TFG to move out of the way of the Bastians.  Hmmm I'll have to have a think on that one, not that it made much of a difference. Although by this time there were quite a few people knocking about around the table talking so I may not have been paying the best of attention at this point. So most of my stuff dies in this turn, the Striders were down to one man, the Legionnaires were down to one or two men left.  It was looking pretty bad.

The yellow dice are markers for the Incubi that are going to pop up in my maintenance phase.

Anyway so it come to my next turn and I activate Searyn first who casts Blight Bringer on one of the Bastions that she can see, I moved the Hellion to get it out of the way and it died to a free strike.  I boosted the damage on the testament doing a bit I think, he was sitting on three focus I think and then came the Angelius.  The first one his twice I think and did a fair amount of damage.  The next one charges in and hits,  I roll the dice and 2 and the other two dice go on the floor, I retreive them to roll them again and one of the guys around our table who shall remain nameless, pipes up "I bet it'll be a double one.".  I rolled the dice and they came up on double ones.  Not happy I only needed a seven on three dice to kill him, I think that the Testament had something like two life left at this point.  Not quite done I managed to move on of the incubi in and take two swings at him as well but didn't hit with either, or that I think would probably have done him.  With seconds left Neil allocates three focus to the Crusader who moves to try and bash Searyn, but misses twice and time is called and so it's dice down.

A pic of the last turn.....

So a draw in game one which wasn't a bad start.   Looking at it I found Neil's army pretty scary for Mosh Pit, so much of it and it was pretty resilient as well, I thought I played reasonably well though and should have had the testament with the Angelius.  Just needed one more slightly below average dice roll.  Still a good tight game to start with and always fun to play against Neil and I'd say it's certainly a competitive list that he's picked.

Game Two - No Mans Land - JT-Y - Khador

I call shennigans, it was fix, I can see the headlines now........Tournament Organiser Fixes Draw to Extract Revenge!

Ahem, well maybe not.  I'd played JT-Y in the last few events that we'd both been too and at the moment I was 2 - 0 up but he's built his list with MkII in mind and had been honing it for his first MkII event.

There were lots of heavy jack's in this list and I knew that after last time that I didn't have the same hitting power to take them down, indeed I'm not sure I actually managed when I had quite a few more heavy beasts at my disposal in Altrincham.

Anyway JT-Y's list was as follows....

Epic Butcher,
Wardog,
Kodiak,
Devestator,
Sprigan,
Kodiak,
Uri,
2 Manhunters,
Widow Makers

While chatting in the set up I had a sneaking suspicion that those heavy jacks could move a lot quicker than the steady trundle that JT-Y assured me that they would be moving at.  By the looks of things neither of us would be looking to win by scenario, so I took my second list out for it's first turn to see how things go.

Okay I won the roll for first and set up with Lylyth, Bone Grinders both Angelius, and the Raek in the centre, the Striders went out on the left and deployed forwards and the Death Stalkers and the Totem Hunter went on the right flank.  The Totem Hunter preyed Uri.

JT-Y set up as shown in the pic below.

Out of shot on the left of the picture there is the unit of Widowmakers and one of the Manhunters.

I moved forward fairly cautiously I think and cast Shadow Pack just to be on the safe side as the Butcher has a shotgun and really didn't want him picking away at anything early on, plus he'd rolled seven focus as well.  Lylyth also moved up on to a hill as well.  The Striders advanced and shot at the Widowmakers killing two of them with a Deathstalker wandering across and finishing off the last two.

JT-Y responded by trundling everything forward...

Everything faffed about in the next turn with me moving stuff forward and the Striders failed to shoot the Manhunter, forgot that they had Stealth as well otherwise I'd have moved them further forward, Doh!  The first of a few mistakes in this game that I should have avoided but never mind.  I also moved one of the Angelius up and shot Uri, as I'd realised I couldn't get the Totem Hunter to him without losing him.  This did let me put the prey on the Butcher though, which might come in handy later on.

So this is how my centre looked at the end of turn two....

and then JT-Y charged........  :(

The Butcher rolled six focus, cast Boundless Charge and came thumping though the lines and he popped his feat as well.  The Butcher then started chopping down one of the Angelius but then thankfully missed two of his attacks, meaning it didn't quite get spannered and then the jack's charged in, with the Spriggan hitting the other Angelius and doing about half it's boxes (i know they're not really boxes but you get the idea.).  Then in came the Kodiak, missing it's charge attack but hitting with the other not quite killing it.  It had three life left.  The Manhunter on that side charged and cut down the Deathstalker, the devestator charged and killed two striders with Rain of Death, and the other Manhunter charged and killed a Strider.

So the Rage tokens went on the Sprigan and it advanced, taking a free strike which did nothing to it, and it then went on to layeth the smack down on Lylyth, she made two transfers and the other attack didn't do enough to kill her, left her with 4 boxes of health.  Now what I'd intended to do when I moved her up was to cast Shadow Stalk on the Butcher and one of the jacks to keep her out of harms way but had forgot to put Craft Talisman from the Bone Grinders on her, and so she was out of range, if only at this point if I had remembered that she had Range Amplifier on her spells and so it would have been 15" range and so would have been in.  I was lucky that the Sprigan hadn't smeared Lylyth all over the field.

So my next turn and I now really need to kill the Butcher or it's all over in the next turn.  So Lylyth being the slippery thing that she, she walked away from the Sprigan popped her feat and put two out of three shots in to the Butcher, the Striders that were left alive moved over and took a pot shot with a two man CRA but didn't do mutch, and so it was down to the Totem Hunter, who rushed in and chopped the Butcher down, partly due to the cheeky prey from earlier.  A final picture to show how we ended......

Damn that was lucky, I'd not quite realised how the jacks would work with rage token, but that's another one for the experience, in fact that could be said of all the games that I'd played over the course of the day as I don't think that I faced a caster that I'd faced before the event since we started with MkII.

Another fun tight game though where I made a few mistakes but thankfully the luck that deserted me in game one was there for me in game two.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

So after game two was lunch and the much talked about Hot Pot was okay, not so sure about the pie crusts but I didn't get chance to validate that with a second tasting as it was stolen by a Minx.  Not to worry the filling was pretty good.

So on to game three....

Game Three - Break the Line - Jimbo Johnson - Circle

Jimbo had a very beast heavy armoour, it looked like something that I'd have played with Epic Thagrosh.  I chose to use Epic Lylyth again as I'd been on the end of Chain Lightning before and so thought that the stealth army might be a good idea.

Anyway Jimbo was using the following............

Krugar,
Blackclad,
Feral Warpwolf,
Pureblood Warpwold,
Gnarl Horn Satyr,
Woldwyrd,
Argus.
Lord of the Feast

Okay didn't take pics fo the deployment but the pics of the first turns shows how things progressed, most things moved forwards, I think Jimbo went first and came forward then in my turn I used lock the target on the Feral Warpwolf and moved the Striders up to CRA the same target but failed to scratch it and the Totem Hunter ran down the left flank.

In Jimbo's turn two the Feral warped for speed moved over and ate the Totem Hunter, not very good placement on my part really, forgot that it could warp for speed and pretty much everything else came forward, with Krugar popping his feat and mowing down the Striders, and casting some defensive buff's against armour, extra defence and extra armour against shooting I think.

So in my turn two I can see that Kruegar's out in the open and even with the defensive buff's decide to risk it and go for the kill.  He also had three Fury left on him for transfers.

So Lylyth stands still for the aiming bonus and additional dice of damage and lets of three shots at Kruegar, doing a significatn amount of damage, Jimbo only chose to transfer the last shot, which had only rolled a 4 for damage, and then the first Angelius opened fire with two boosted POW 12's which were both transferred, leaving it up to the second Angelius to move across and finish the job, it missed the first shot but blew Kruegar away with the second shot, finishing like this,

So a quick games always a good game as they say.  I don't think that Jimbo had see the latest version of Lylyth 2 and was aware of quite how shooty she is, otherwise I don't think he'd have stuck Krugar out there, although i think he was trying to catcch her in his feat.  She was just out of range though.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

and so on to......

Game Four - Multiple Mosh Pits - Alex Smith - Khador

Based on the Scenario and knowing that Alex had the Behemoth in both his lists I think, I chose to use the all stealthy list so that I could avoid the bombards dropping all over me.  Again I'd pretty much decided that I wasn't going to be winning the game on scenario so it was down to assassinating the caster again.  Although my general plan when it comes to the two mini mosh pits is to crush/capture one before moving on to the next one.

Anyway Alex's list comprised off.....

Irusk
Wardog,
Behemoth,
Juggernaut,
Full Wintergaurd + UA + 3 Rockets,
Comrade Joe,
6 Kosite Woodsmen,
Yuri.

Anyway I think I won the roll to go first I think, Striders, Deathstalkers and Totem Hunter went on the left and everything else went in the middle.

Alex deployed thus.....(sorry about the blurriness, I even took two pics and they were both as bad as each other.)

and I moved out to meet him casting Shadow Pack to avoid the Woodsmen turning up and shooting Lylyth in the back.  although I got something wrong about the Woodsmen as I made an assumption that they would be coming on the board behind me, so on my board edge.  I'd not realised that they would be coming on on either side, which would lead to some fun later on.

the Winterguard moved forwards towards the mosh pit on their side, the black markers on the table indicate the centre of each of the mosh pits, and the jacks and Irusk can across the table towards me dropping shots from the bombards as they came.

I new that I had to play a bit of a coy game against Alex as I knew that I had to lure both jacks in to striking range of the Angels and so had to provoke them to come for me somehow so it was all very cagey for the first few turns.  So as the heavy jacks advanced I swung my centre out to the left where the advance deployed troops were situated.

and then on came the Woodsmen.  I'd already lost a few Striders to the bombards of the Behemoth and Yuri, who had been deployed opposite them, the Totem hunter did for him earlier on in the game.

They remained stationary to gain the aiming bonus and shot at the Striders.  Only two of them were within the 5" to beat the Stealth and the rest of them couldn't hit.  So in my next turn the Striders and Death Stalkers waste the woodsmen between them.  I then cast Shadow Stalk on the Jugger from Lylyth and stick her out in front of the Angelius, who stay pretty much in the same place as they were in the last shot of my turn.  The Raek moves forwards and casts Shadowstalk on the Behemoth.

Alex then loads the two jacks with Fury, Irusk casts Superiority on the Behemoth and it charges the Raek, who slips behind the Behemoth taking 18 points of damage, ouch, leaving it with two left.  That's an error on the card as it says 19 but has 20 boxes.  Anyway the Jugger then charges Lylyth who also Shadowstalks away but due to Evasive ignores the free strike and slips forward to be in bow range of Irusk.  Seeing the problem the Winterguard run across to get in front of Irusk and form a bit of a protective screen, one man deep.  I move over one of the Deathstalkers and shoot down two of the Winterguard who fail their toough rolls.  Lylyth stays stationary, activates Decimation shoots Irusk full of holes.

That'll teach him for cursing my dice in the first game ;)  A cagey game this one but I knew it had to be due to the 16 strong unit of Winterguard and the two heavy jacks.  I do think that this is the game that I played best in and I think I needed to as well, as Alex knows what he's doing with his Khador as we were 3rd and 4th going in to the last round.

So 3 wins and a draw saw me finish in second place overall which was nice but even nicer still was picking up Most Sporting Opponent and Best Painted as well, which as JT-Y put it meant that "Padge has had quite a good day."

So many thanks to all four of my opponents, and JT-Y for the organisation.  It was a really good fun event, nice to get to chat to some other players and hang out between games.  I even made it home in good time despite the weather and maze of country roads around Chorley.

So many thanks one and all :)

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Event Conclusion

Okay so to a conclusion of sorts then.  The event on the whole was really good and very enjoyable.  The venue is nice, there was plenty of space for the tables and around and between the tables, lunch was reasonably tasty, and it was a nice friendly atmosphere.  All the games were played in a good way, friendly yet competitive, and all pretty close until the end of the game.  The rules pack for the vent was pretty good as well, clear, with a points system that works and I like that 'caster as worth their jack points in Victory Points.  It's a nice simple solution to the issues around scoring, since the change in points values.

Other than that I think that both lists I took did pretty well and that in most cases I played pretty well.  I did make a few errors as it turns out and not ones that were positional in nature, so rules errors basically. Like, as has been pointed out to me, casting Blight Bringer on an enemy model in the first game.  We were getting up close to time and I think it's rushing that forced the error, it could just have easily been a play error that could have been made instead I guess.  Still for 18 months worth of playing and my first few games of MkII (I think I've played about ten or so MkII games before the event) and so I'm still classing myself as a reasonably new player to the game.

On the whole I think that the lists that I took were pretty decent lists as well.  Having the two Angelius really made the rest of the list small though, but without them the lists lacked hitting power and I do think that some hitting power is needed to deal with the newer tougher incarnations of warjacks.  I don't think that one Heavy Warbeast is going to be enough in any Hordes list, two is going to be the optimum I think as 3 is probably too far.  Warbeasts just don't look as resilent as Warjacks.  Maybe the tiered lists might change that for some beasts but it's probably not likely and we've got a pretty decent amount of time to wait for that.

So oh yeah the results....

I finished in second place over all which was pretty good as my goal at the events I've been to so far is to finish in the top five, so it was nice to achieve that.

I was also awarded Best Painted and Most Sporting Opponent which I was really surprised by and really pleased with as well.

Oh and I was also first in faction too, but no coin for me as they were only for the Warmachine armies, maybe next time :)

So the next event is Vapnartak in York in early Feb and I'd very much like to take the Cryx to that event but I need to check the rules pack for painting requirements and then see if I can fit the time in between now and then to get the cryx built and based in time.
